About this tool

Create website icons from a square crop

Icons use square canvases so browsers and devices can display them consistently. Select the most recognisable part of your image and inspect it at 16, 32, and 64 pixels before exporting. A clear crop of at least 512 pixels avoids enlarging the standard outputs. Smaller images are accepted, with a quality notice when enlargement is needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why do website icons use a square crop?

Square canvases work consistently across browser tabs, bookmarks, and device icons. The crop keeps the selected artwork square without stretching it.

What source size is recommended?

Use a clear image at least 512 x 512 pixels. Smaller sources are allowed, but outputs larger than the selected crop need enlargement and may look softer.

Does Transparent remove an image background?

No. Transparent preserves transparent areas already in the source. PNG and WebP support alpha transparency; use the background remover separately to remove an existing background.

How are JPG and Apple touch backgrounds handled?

JPG uses a solid background, white by default. Apple touch and maskable icons also use the selected opaque background color.

What does the ICO file contain?

The combined favicon ICO contains 16 x 16, 32 x 32, and 48 x 48 frames, even when the cropped source is smaller.

What are PWA and maskable icons?

Regular PWA icons use 192 and 512 pixel PNGs. The separate maskable icon uses an opaque background and places the complete cropped artwork inside the central safe circle. Icons alone do not make a complete installable PWA.

How do I install the icon set?

Upload the extracted files to /icons/ and paste head_snippet.html links inside your HTML head. Merge generated icon entries into an existing manifest if you have one. Configure the app name, start URL, scope, and display mode separately.
